This is my first post with distraction free writing!! and I must say i absolutely love it!! That, in addition to the writing helper makes WordPress a great way to blog. And obviously, I want to get featured on freshly pressed; so I left everything I was doing, and started racking my brains for a topic to write about. Since I couldn’t come up with anything I started looking at what other people had written. I came across this interesting post, read two lines of it, liked it and left the page. I then realized that I hadn’t read a single post completely for a very long time. All I ever did was skim through the page, like the post if there were nice pictures in it and occasionally leave a ‘really liked your blog’ comment so that the person would come back and read my blog. Basically, I was networking. I had stopped actually reading the posts. The only reason I even visit other blogs now, is so that they come back and read mine. Whats the fun in that now? Even the just write article by Jane Wells I simply skimmed through and the only reason I knew that there was a possibility of getting featured on freshly pressed was because it was written in bold letters.
For my own blog I have a lot planned. Two huge things coming up in August and in November. And other small plans along the way. When I do so much for my own blog and hope that others take an effort in reading what I write, why shouldn’t I read their posts too?? By the way, I just switched to full screen mode, and I am right now in blogging heaven!! For a moment I wondered where it had all gone, but then I realized that I was on distraction free!!
anyway, I have stopped reading freshly pressed and postaweek2011, and now that I realize it, I feel completely horrible.
Someone once told me in a comment, that some great reading can and will inspire one to do some good writing. and that is so true!! There are so many interesting blogs, with interesting posts, written by interesting people in wordpress. And every new post that I read expands my horizons – more each day. Starting from today, I will read every post that I click on. I hope you do too.
So, in addition to just write, now more than ever – just read
these may not seem like big numbers but through each of these numbers i have learnt something, experienced something, shared something and gained something. today is the first day of the second half of my first blog year. yes, i started my blog 6 months ago and when i see it today its completely different. its almost like i’m completely different. i have grown with this project through every new thing that i have taken my blog through. be it the ‘let your blog snow’ thing, or postaweek2011, or crossing 100 hits
. my first comment, my first header. i have seen so many firsts here that the memories are cosmic. i love my blog and i can’t wait for my first blogoversary.!!!
these are the things that i have learnt from other bloggers and through the experience of blogging myself:
i hope i don’t sound like a 6-month old know-it-all, but its just that i have loved wordpress for the past 6 months and i am dying to share my experiences. after months of going through other people’s tips on blogging/writing, i finally feel like a part of something and i want to show-off a bit too!!
so happy blogging guys!! and let me know how long you have been blogging and your experiences all through it.
two weeks ago i signed up for postaweek2011- an experiment by the folks at wordpress. it is an initiative to make people blog more regularly. and it is essentially what it is called-all the people who have signed up for this are required to post a minimum of one post every week on their respective blogs. they have a sister project called postaday2011 but i felt that would be too hectic for me. if i can learn to post every week without fail, then i can manage post a day-maybe next year.
last sunday i said to myself ‘dont write about the first thing that comes into your mind. no. that will be writing for the sake of writing. you have a week, think it through and come up with a kickass piece.’
on tuesday i thought ‘oh what the hell-i still have time. i can do this later this week.’
when friday rolled around i said ‘ i’m free tomorrow- i’ll sit and do it then’
yesterday i told myself ‘i had unexpected plans. things like that happen all the time. i can do it tomorrow because i am too tired today.’
when i woke up today morning i saw the clock. with every second that passed i realized i had less time.
what do we get out of making excuses like this for ourselves all the time?? i created my own blog because i wanted to commit to writing regularly. no one asked me to do it. if i signed up voluntarily, then why am i still lagging behind? if this is out of my own interests why am i not putting in a little effort???
now i am going to sit on my p.c. and write the two pieces that i have been thinking about all week. so if you dont find two more posts today you can sue me!!!!!!
The internet is a crazy place. Everyday, there is so much new about the internet that it is sometimes hard to keep up. But no matter how far behind we are, we always manage to follow the various trends that arrive. Over the past years there have been so many things that we all got hooked on; to that today, when we look back, its hard to imagine that we did all of that. As far as I can go, these up-to-the-minute fancies started with the World Wide Web.
There was a time when people actually used to chat in chat rooms like Aol and their lingo consisted of things like WTL(will talk later-they hadn’t heard of brb back then). It’s amazing to see how people’s expectations and ideas change. When the www was introduced in 1990 people went crazy thinking that this was the best they had ever got. Even the hours that it sometimes took to get a connection to the www seemed to be worth it. (And here are we who think 60 seconds is too long a wait.
) they used search engines like ask Jeeves and hotbot. I still remember my mother would go to Y.M.C.A every Saturday afternoon to chat with her brother and sister both living outside Mangalore. They had two hours a week and the three of them loved it because they could be together even though they were miles away. (Of course today I chat with my cousins all the time… all they have to do is text me and I’ll be online in a matter of minutes… then it’s just a click away to conferencing.)
After the craze over chat rooms and AOL, came the recent obsession with social networking sites. Every year people would rush to a new site- and thus we found hi5, MySpace, orkut and now facebook. Then somewhere in the past year or two everyone seemed to be fascinated with twitter-a micro blogging site.
As most of the people following this trend were celebrities of some sort, it soon became very popular. Which brings us to the present day where the obsession with blogging is slowly seeping in. a few months ago all we did was read certain famous blogs like Aamir Khan’s or BigB’s blogs. But off late I find almost everyone is starting their own blog. People now spend less time on facebook so they can devote more time to their respective blogs. We comment and post on other people’s blogs so that they will come to our’s. it’s the latest technique of networking. People write blogs about almost everything and anything. From food, dance and travel to religion, countries and education. U name it and there will be a blog on it!! Of course there are still many people who are “blog-less” but like I said the trend is only seeping in. Why is it that we all are so hooked on to the internet and its various trends?? It’s almost as if we cannot keep ourselves from going online at least once a day… and the number increases during exam times. If people do not have a computer or net access at home then they will be blogging from their phones. If your just out having coffee with a friend and you suddenly see the person typing away on their phone you know that the person is probably posting something like ‘having a cup of coffee with my friend xx after such a long time ’ or ‘weather is just perfect right now’. There will be bloggers posting stuff at 12 in the night, at 4 in the morning or also at 3 in d afternoon. There are teachers who blog in between classes and moms who blog when their babies are asleep…
So that is what the internet lovers are hooked on to right now… so lets hope we have a lovely time blogging until the craze wears out.
